Know the property, enjoy the ink
Properties are a practical guide to how an ink may look and behave. Always follow the maker's compatibility, use, and cleaning instructions for the specific product.
Iron gall
What to expectIron compounds oxidize in air, often producing a pronounced color change as the writing dries. Water resistance and archival stability increase after drying, though complete waterproofness is not guaranteed.
CareEven modern fountain-pen formulas should not be allowed to dry inside a pen. Flush regularly and avoid prolonged contact with steel nibs and other metal parts. Ascorbic acid is sometimes used for iron residue that water cannot remove, but check material compatibility and prefer the maker's cleaner and instructions.
Pigment
What to expectWater-insoluble pigments generally provide better water and light resistance than dye inks, with crisp, low-feathering lines. Performance still varies by product and paper.
CarePigment that dries inside a pen can clog its feed. Cap the pen securely, flush it regularly, and empty it before long storage. Follow product-specific directions for shaking, mixing, and cleaning water.
Shimmer
What to expectFine reflective particles make writing sparkle as the viewing angle changes. It is normal for those particles to settle at the bottom of the bottle.
CareShimmer particles can clog a nib or feed. Confirm fountain-pen compatibility, follow the maker's directions for agitation and suitable nib widths, and clean frequently. Never fill a fountain pen with shimmer ink intended only for dip pens.
